Shreyas Iyer, the Indian batter, has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia which begins on March 17 with the first match to be played in Mumbai on Friday.
This is due to the recurrence of his back issues which had made him miss the first two Tests against Australia as well in Nagpur and Delhi. He made his comeback in the third Test in Indore and fielded for almost 170 overs in the Australian innings in the last Test in Ahmedabad.
But when it came to India’s batting, Ravindra Jadeja was promoted to no.5 as Shreyas Iyer had complained of back pain and was taken to hospital for scans, which later ruled him out of the remainder of the match and India was a batter short in their innings of 571 runs.
In his post-match media interaction, India captain Rohit Sharma said that Iyer ‘does not seem to be doing that well.’
He said: “Poor guy. It just was such an unfortunate incident. He had to wait all day to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well.
Obviously, that’s why he’s not present here, so we don’t know the exact status of how long he will take to recover or when he will be back. When it happened, it did not look that great. I hope he recovers quickly and comes back and plays again.”
It has also being reported that the senior selection committee won’t be naming a replacement for Iyer for the three ODIs against Australia as a strong 17-member squad was named for the series.
Shreyas Iyer To Miss A Few Games In IPL 2023 As Well, As Doctors Mull Whether He Needs Surgery Or Not
As per reports in Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer is struggling to walk, and could also miss a few matches in the upcoming IPL 2023 as well, where he captains the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise.
Specialist doctors have also been consulted by the BCCI for Iyer and they will take a call on whether he needs surgery. Iyer could be on the sidelines for up to three months if he undergoes surgery, said a source.
Iyer had joined the Test team only for the second game in Delhi after completing his rehab for a back injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He scored 4, 12 in Delhi and 0 and 26 in Indore.
